Tromsø Whale Watching: Dive into the Enchanting Waters with Majestic Whales

Beginning Your Expedition:
Arrive no later than 05:20 AM outside the Scandic Ishavshotel entrance. Spot our prominently red bus, usually labeled “whale bus.” If the bus deviates in color, simply approach. It’s crucial you personally approach the driver to verify your booking by mentioning your name.

No one will pick you up from the hotel, ensuring you take the initiative is essential. Punctuality is paramount for a timely return, especially if you have a Northern Lights tour later in the evening.

The Drive Through Majestic Lyngen Alps:
En route to Skjervøy, marvel at the grandeur of Norway’s renowned Lyngen Alps. These mountain ranges ascend dramatically from the sea, culminating in peaks nearing 1830 meters, adorned with glaciers and arguably Norway’s most picturesque fjord landscapes. This 4-hour bus ride promises a scenic indulgence and relaxation.

Culinary Recommendations:
Our primary meal is post the whale-watching session, around 1 PM. To fend off cold and hunger during the tour, eat before the boat ride. Pack snacks and drinks for convenience.

Post whale tour and before the bus departure, there’s usually time to purchase food at a local Skjervøy store (except Sundays). During the return bus journey, we often take two ferries where simple warm food, waffles, and snacks can typically be purchased.

Dress Smartly for Comfort:

    • Layering is Key: A thick layer of merino wool closest to your skin.
    • Avoid Cotton: Wet cotton will lead to you feeling cold.
    • Mid-layers: Opt for a thick woolen sweater or similar. Down jackets lose insulative properties when wet.

On Team with the Whales:
We respect these marine giants’ habitats. Though we maintain a distance, our quiet motors lead curious whales to approach, sometimes as near as 2 meters.

Your Whale Watching Choices:

    1. Whale Watching RIB Tour: Includes transfer from Tromsø to Skjervøy and back.
    2. Whale Watching Self-Transfer: Guests arrive at Skjervøy independently. For those renting a car and wishing to follow our bus, liaise with our driver. Choose the Tromsø-Nordkjosbotn-Skjervøy route via E8 and E6, bypassing non-operational early ferry routes.

Capture the Moments:
Feel free to photograph the whales. Ensure your camera’s protection from sea spray during motion.

Additional Amenities:
Stay connected on our Wi-Fi equipped bus. Before arriving in Skjervøy, it’s advised to use the bus restroom to maximize our time at sea.

Safety is our Priority:
Safety remains paramount. We operate Rigid Buoyancy Boats (RBB) with dual engines, with the proximity of other boats heightening safety. Our thick Arctic floatation suit and life vest contribute to security. Our skipper imparts a detailed safety briefing before each ride.

We meticulously check weather conditions, liaising with local fishermen and skippers. Though rare, we may have to cancel due to unexpected harsh weather. Regularly check your emails for any updates.

Return and Next Adventure:
Expect to be back in Tromsø at the same Scandic Ishavshotel around 17:30. For those booked for a Northern Lights tour on the same evening, your guide will seamlessly transition you from the whale bus directly to the Northern Lights expedition.
