No – cancelling because of Tromsø’s weather or the Kp index is a common mistake.

Tromsø is surrounded by mountain ranges up to 1830 meters high. These block moist coastal air and create a rain shadow effect that often leaves the inland much clearer. Just behind the mountains lies Skibotn, officially the driest place in Norway, and one of our most used destinations. By driving only 1–2.5 hours we can often leave the clouds behind and reach clear skies, either in inland Norway or Finland.

The Kp index is also misunderstood. It mainly shows how far south the aurora oval stretches, not how strong or beautiful the Northern Lights will be in Tromsø. Since Tromsø lies directly under the oval, we see auroras even at Kp 0 – in fact, every week we experience great shows on such low values.

If you haven’t heard from us about a cancellation, it means we have checked the forecasts and know there are areas with good chances for aurora. Trust the process – our job is to get you to clear skies.

Your adventure begins when your guide picks you up outside Scandic Ishavshotel in Tromsø.

Pick-up normally takes place between 17:00 and 19:30, depending on the season. In mid-winter we often start at 17:00, 17:30 or 18:00, while in autumn and spring, when it gets dark later, departures are usually at 18:30, 19:00 or 19:30. The exact pick-up time is shown when you book — it is never fixed, since we adjust to daylight conditions.

Before departure we stop by our base just 100 meters from Scandic Ishavshotel, where you change into extreme winter suits and Baffin boots rated to –70°C.

Once everyone is dressed, we head out in modern minibuses to the area with the clearest skies. Sometimes this is close to Tromsø, while other nights it may be 1–3 hours away — even into Finland if that is where the best conditions are.

At the chosen location we set up camp. A bonfire is lit if weather allows, and you are served a hot meal with coffee, tea or hot chocolate. While waiting, your guide shares Arctic stories and also takes professional aurora portraits of you under the lights, if the aurora is visible and conditions allow.

If the weather changes, we move on to where the skies are clearer. This flexibility is the reason our success rate is among the highest in Tromsø — we don’t wait, we chase.

After 7–9 hours we return to Tromsø with drop-off again at Scandic Ishavshotel. As it will be late at night, many guests continue by taxi to their place. Taxis are normally available in the city center, and if needed, our team is happy to help arrange one.

No. In Tromsø we have Northern Lights activity on average every second day from September 1 to April 6. Because Tromsø lies directly under the aurora oval, the activity here is very stable and reliable from year to year.

Why Tromsø is special
Further south, away from the aurora oval, you need stronger solar activity to see the lights, and the difference between years becomes bigger. In Tromsø this is not the case — the variation is so small that it is not noticeable for visitors.

What matters most
The important factor is not the year, but weather conditions. That is why we always chase — driving to the areas with the best skies, even several hours inland or into Finland if needed. This flexibility gives us one of the highest success rates worldwide.

Dress in layers
Wool is essential in the Arctic. Always wear a very warm wool base layer next to your skin, plus a very warm mid-layer of wool or fleece. Add a hat, scarf and mittens. Avoid cotton — it does not insulate when damp.

On our minibus tours
We provide extreme winter suits, and Baffin boots rated to –70°C, so you stay warm even in harsh conditions. Inner layers are still essential, but you don’t need your own outer jacket, outer pants, or boots.

On larger bus tours
Big bus operators do not provide suits or boots, so you must bring your own very warm, windproof and water-resistant jacket and pants, plus insulated winter boots that are high enough for walking in snow. Without this, you risk being cold.

Our minibus tours always start with pick-up at Scandic Ishavshotel entrance in Tromsø city center, the most convenient meeting point for our guests. Drop-off is also at the same location at the end of the night.

Pick-up times depend on the season and are normally between 17:00 and 19:30:

In mid-winter (November–January), when it gets dark early, pick-up is usually at 17:00, 17:30 or 18:00.

In autumn and spring (September–October, February–April), when darkness falls later, departures are usually at 18:30, 19:00 or 19:30.

Big bus Northern Lights tour
If you join a large bus tour, the meeting point is at the harbour in front of Fiskekompaniet Restaurant, Killengreens gate 6, 9008 Tromsø.

You must be ready 10 minutes before the scheduled departure time. These tours also start in the 17:00–19:30 window, depending on which month and when it gets dark enough in the evening.

Whale watching in Tromsø takes place from October 17 to January 31, when massive schools of herring attract orcas, humpback whales, and sometimes fin whales to the fjords around Skjervøy.

This is the prime time to experience one of the Arctic’s greatest natural spectacles.

The whale watching tour lasts around 12 hours. Meeting time is 05:15 at Tromsø bus terminal, and the bus departs at 05:30 sharp for Skjervøy. Return to Tromsø is around 17:30.

By whale watching guidelines, we must keep a distance of at least 50 meters from the whales. However, because we use specially selected RIB and RBB boats that are light, quiet, and create far less vibration than larger vessels, the whales often choose to approach us on their own.

When the whales decide to come closer, being less than 50 meters is perfectly acceptable. It is quite common to see orcas and humpbacks just 1–2 meters from the boat, and sometimes they even glide directly underneath, giving you a breathtaking view of their entire body through the crystal-clear Arctic water.

There is no minimum age requirement, but for safety reasons everyone must be at least 120 cm tall to fit into the flotation suits and handle the RIB ride safely.

Yes. Safety always comes first, and Arctic weather can change quickly. If conditions require us to cancel, you will be notified by 18:00 the evening before.

You will then be offered either a full refund, the option to join another available day, or the chance to change to another tour.

We always wait until the latest forecast before making a decision, since Arctic weather can shift last minute. For this reason, it is very important that you check your email regularly the evening before your tour, so you can react quickly if a cancellation occurs.

Because all whale operators in Tromsø must cancel around 20–25% of tours each season, we strongly recommend booking whale watching on both your first full day and your last full day in Tromsø.

Yes, there are toilets available during parts of the whale tour. On the transfer bus from Tromsø to Skjervøy you will find a toilet on board, and there are also facilities at the harbor before departure.

Please note that our RIB and RBB boats do not have toilets on board, as they are small and designed for speed and stability. However, once on the water you will typically spend about 3 hours with the whales, and our guests normally find this manageable.

If having a toilet on the boat is essential for you, we recommend choosing a larger whale watching vessel, but please keep in mind that this comes with much less time in the whale area and sightings usually from a greater distance. The Tromsø Fjord Tour is a shorter and more relaxed experience, lasting around 5–6 hours, typically from 10:00 to around 15:00. It’s perfect if you want beautiful fjords and Arctic scenery in a more flexible half-day format.

We recommend wearing two warm wool layers: a base layer directly on your skin and a thicker mid-layer of wool or fleece. Wool is essential, as it keeps you warm even if it gets damp — never wear cotton closest to your body. Add a hat, scarf, and mittens for extra warmth.

On very cold days, we provide insulated winter suits and boots designed for extreme Arctic conditions (around –20°C). On milder days (around –5°C), these can be too warm, so you must bring your own windproof and water-resistant jacket and pants, as well as good, warm winter shoes, to stay comfortable.

Yes, the fjord tour is suitable for all ages and is a wonderful experience for families. The tour requires no physical effort, and we make several scenic stops for photos and relaxation.

There may be some short, easy walks in simple terrain, but all highlights can also be enjoyed directly from the vehicle if you have limited mobility or are traveling with babies.

Yes—absolutely, and many guests do this to maximize their time in Tromsø.

The Day Tour to Senja is a full Arctic experience (around 10–10.5 hours on weekdays and 8.5 hours on Saturdays), starting at 07:00 (09:00 on Saturdays). Many guests combine it with a Northern Lights tour the same evening, and we have not experienced that this feels like too much. It becomes a long and exciting day, but there is plenty of time to relax during the scenic bus journey and ferry crossing.

However, it is not recommended to take the Senja tour the day after a Northern Lights tour, as aurora tours often return late (01:00–03:00), which can leave you with only around 3 hours of sleep after a long chase.

The Tromsø Fjord Tour is a shorter and more relaxed option (around 10:00–15:00), and combines perfectly with a Northern Lights tour the same day. It is also the best choice if you had a Northern Lights tour the night before, as it allows you to sleep longer and still enjoy a beautiful day in the Arctic.

It becomes a long day with no real break between tours, but you can rest during the bus journey and ferry crossing, and many guests choose this to maximize their experience.

Tromsø Fjord Tour is perfect to combine with Northern Lights, thanks to its later start (10:00) and shorter duration. You can comfortably do a Northern Lights tour both the night before and the same evening as the fjord tour.

Always book Northern Lights tours on your first possible evenings—this gives you backup nights if weather changes. Do not rely on just one night, as this is the most common mistake and often means missing the experience.

Tips for Maximizing Your Tromsø Experience

Whale Safari first – and last

Every season, more than 20% of Whale Safaris are cancelled due to storms at sea. Since seats are almost impossible to get last minute, the best strategy is to book Whale Safaris on both your first full day and your last day.

If you are satisfied after the first tour, simply cancel the second. As long as you cancel 24+ hours before departure, you get a full refund.

Book enough Northern Lights tours

Nobody knows if you will see the aurora on your first night or if you need 2, 3, 5, 10 or more nights. The safest way is to book as many chases as possible in your first days. If you are lucky early, you can cancel the rest for a full refund (24h+).

Active or relaxed?

Some guests want a very active trip: a daytime tour and a Northern Lights chase every day. Others prefer a slower pace. Remember, a Northern Lights chase normally lasts 7–9 hours, so combining it with a daytime activity makes for very long days. Both approaches work – it’s just about your energy and preferences.

Why booking early matters

Do not make the mistake many guests do: booking too few tours and relying on luck. When they realize they need more, we and all other quality operators are already sold out. What remains are average companies with late departures, crowded buses, cold clothes, and no flexibility to drive to Finland when skies are clearer there.

To enjoy the Arctic fully on any of our tours, it is essential to dress correctly. The most important rule is simple: avoid cotton and down. Cotton absorbs moisture and makes you cold, while down loses insulation when wet. Wool is always the best choice.

Mid layer: Thick wool sweater or fleece
Outer layer: Wind- and water-resistant jacket and trousers
Accessories: Warm hat, scarf, mittens, and two pairs of thick wool socks (80% wool or more)
