When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Tromsø, and how many nights should I book?
We recommend pre-booking as many Northern Lights tours as you can. If you only book a few nights and later realize you need more, it will usually be too late – premium operators are sold out weeks or even months in advance.
Guests who wait often end up with average companies that may not drive far enough for clear skies, provide insufficient clothing, or start too late to reach Finland when that is where the best conditions are.
There is nothing to lose by booking several tours in advance – if you have already seen enough, you can always cancel any tour 24 hours or more before departure and receive a full refund.
How can I maximize my chances of seeing great Northern Lights?
Stay long enough
The Northern Lights are unpredictable. Staying 5–7 nights in Tromsø gives you more chances if some nights are cloudy or activity is low.
Book your first evenings
Always schedule tours on your first 3–5 nights, ideally already on your arrival evening. This leaves spare nights later if needed.
Arrive before 16:00
Flights landing after 16:00 make you lose one of your best chances to chase the aurora the same day.
Book consecutive nights
Don’t leave gaps. Consecutive bookings maximize backup nights, and with 24h free cancellation, extra tours are risk-free.
Start early, go far
Some tours depart too late to reach inland areas or Finland where skies are clearest. We always leave in time to go as far as needed.
Choose those who go the extra mile
Aurora chasing often means long drives and late returns. We don’t stop early — we keep going until you’ve had the best chance.
Dress for Arctic conditions
We provide extreme suits and Baffin boots rated to –70°C, so you can stay outdoors for hours. Bring wool layers, hat, scarf and mittens.
Plan day tours wisely
Aurora shows can last until 03:00. Avoid early activities the next day, and keep energy for the nights.
How many days should I stay in Tromsø to see the Northern Lights?
The Northern Lights are unpredictable — you might see them on your first night, or only after several evenings.
The longer you stay in Tromsø, the higher your chances. We recommend at least 5 nights, but more is always better.
Each night is different — from a soft green glow to a sky filled with dancing colors. That’s why many guests pre-book several tours.
